Alaska
Land of the
Midnight Sun

June 23, 2001

We had two itinerary choices: one north to Denali National Park and one south to the Kenai peninsula.  But, if we could drive at night (or was it day?), we could do both.  We picked up our rental car, and at midnight, started heading north from Anchorage to Denali.
Several factors now come into play.  First, Alaska is more than twice the size of Texas and significant portions are wilderness.  The roads are good, but there just aren't that many of them, so, there is essentially one way up to Denali.  To return to Anchorage, turn the car around and head in the other direction on the same road.  There is no viable alternate route.  The same held true for our southern route to the Kenai peninsula - Alaska Highway 1 south, then turn around and come back up the same road.  The route we took can be seen in the map.  The blue portion is our trip from Anchorage to Denali National Park.  The brown portion shows the route we took on the Kenai peninsula.  I know what you're thinking - it's less than two inches on the map - big deal.  We were in Alaska 2 days - we put 1,008 miles on the rental car!

Off we go...
