Banff to Lake Louise

Actually, the elk can pose a safety threat to the towns, especially during the mating or calving seasons.  One answer, to keep them out of town, is the Texas Gate.  It's a series of rollers that will allow cars to pass over but the animals won't place their hooves on the unstable surface.
To protect the elk from traffic on the Trans Canada Highway, bridges have been constructed which guide them safely from one side to the other.  Fences prevent the elk from crossing anywhere except at these specially constructed animal crossings.
It's time to head north from Banff to Lake Louise, about a 45 minute ride along the Trans Canada Highway.  About half way there, is the most impressive sight on that stretch of highway, Castle Mountain.  It isn't particularly high but it is huge.
This photo doesn't do it justice; it's seven miles from one end to the other.
