Medicine Lake

On our way back, we passed Medicine Lake which is unique in its own right.  It’s a full-fledged lake in the spring, but owing to cracks and fissures in the rock formation at the bottom of the lake, it drains virtually dry in the summer.  This oddity provided a number of tales and traditions for the native Indians in the area.
Continuing back towards Jasper, we came upon this magnificent view of one of the mountain ranges, towering above the pine forest below.  Looking closely, you can see the result of the geological activity that formed these mountains, as the layers of rock are sitting at nearly a 90-degree angle.
The Maligne River flows north from Maligne Lake, forming the 75 foot gorge of Maligne Canyon.
This view is of the river just before it droops through the limestone bedrock to form the canyon.  You can see the falls just starting to form at the lower right.
