Our last adventure in Jasper was a canoe float
trip on the Athabasca River.
Our guide was a college student majoring
in outdoor recreation. (Honest!)
In the early 1800s, French-Canadian fur traders,
voyageurs, plied their trade on these waters. Capturing that theme,
we were given sashes to wear around our waists, just as the original voyageurs
wore sashes given to them by their wives and girlfriends. This was
definitely a float trip, not a whitewater raft trip. The current
of the Athabasca is swift enough to carry us along, but the ride is relaxing
and offers an opportunity to see the wilderness from a different perspective.
