Arizona

May 2001

Woody Guthrie, the American troubadour, said the further west you walk, across the flat, hard crust, gravely desert, the browner, hotter, stiller, and emptier the country gets.  These two photos document that piece of homespun wisdom.  The first photo was taken about 25 miles east of Flagstaff, looking west towards Flagstaff.
If you look closely, you can see the outline of the mountain that dominates the skyline around Flagstaff.  The photo at the right was taken looking out the windshield while driving east on Interstate 40, about 30 miles east of Flagstaff.  Woody Guthrie (This land is your land, this land is my land...) was right - the country is definitely "emptier" in this part of Arizona.
