Arizona
Grand Canyon
May 2001
It was Sunday morning, May 26, 2001, we had an early breakfast (6AM), stored our luggage in the hotel, and got on a coach bus for the 2 hour ride from Flagstaff to Lee's Ferry.  Jim, I, and 16 others were taking a three day trip that would take us 87 miles down the Colorado River, from Lee's Ferry to bottom of Bright Angel Trail.
My first surprise was how clear the water was and how shallow.  A close look at this picture, and you can see the bottom of the riverbed.  Once on the raft, our lead guide, Mike Trainor along with Matt Gerber, and M.J. (Mary Jane) Bonilla, began sharing the story and history of the canyon.  Lee's Ferry, we were told, was the only spot for a hundred or so miles where the Colorado River could be crossed, and the early Mormon settlers used the ferry on their way to Salt Lake City, where they had to go to register their marriages.  Click here if you were on the trip and want to request the pictures...
