Calaveras County
Summer 1999

    One of America's great literary figures, Mark Twain spent some time in this part of California.
     One of his books was The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, written in the summer of 1860. It inspires the annual Calaveras Frog Jump the third week of each May. As of 1999, the world record is held by Lee Guidici from Santa Clara, with "Rosie the Ribiter" jumping 21 feet, 5 3/4 inches in 1986.
