Calaveras County
Summer 1999

A bit further down the road we came upon Sutter Creek,

which is where the California gold rush began - in 1849.

California's nickname is the Golden State which is often associated with the Gold Rush of 1849 - the miners were even called 49'ers, but the Golden State got its name from the color of the vegetation on the side of the hills - often dried by minimal rainfall, causing the vegetation to turn a certain color of gold - hence, the Golden State.
