Napa
Valley
Grapes & Vineyard

June 2007

The specialty of the Mumm Winery was "Sparkling Wine" (in deference to the French, they don't call it Champaign), made from four different types of grapes including the Pinot Noir grapes pictured to the left along with Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier, and Pinot Gris. It was demonstrated that only the "lightly squeezed" juice from the Pinot grapes is used in their process.

Close by the winery tour are some of their vineyards - these in the Napa Valley, while they have other vineyards north of the San Francisco Bay area.

The complexities of the soil and environment also figure into the product mix. Napa Valley has some 20 or more soil variations while the state of Nebraska has only two. In addition, the weather patterns are unique in that Napa Valley receives little rain during the summer months but has warm days and cool evenings making this an ideal location for growing grapes. We're not really "into" wine, but it was fun seeing the process.
