Summer 1999

Our next road, as we traveled from Lake Tahoe to Yosemite, was California Route 140, which took us east, toward Yosemite. The terrain became more dramatic, with roads curving through the mountains. Only 44 miles, but a slow go.
The road snaked around the mountains - the car had a compass integrated into the mirror and I could watch the direction turn from East to South, to West as we followed the mountain roads.

You need to realize that this photo was taken in 1999 and that what seemed like an extraordinary price to pay at the time would be a bargain by today's standards...

We were told that no gas was available inside Yosemite so fill up first. When we took this picture, gas in Florida was about $1.20 a gallon. This area is sparsely populated and difficult to reach - and you pay the price.

Oh, the good old days...
