A short drive east from Vail finds two things. First, the Mitsubishi Montero that can only go 37 miles per hour uphill can coast downhill on the interstate at 70 miles per hour. Second, this is rugged country and the turn of the century miners had to contend with the terrain. |

The Georgetown Loop Railway was built in 1879 to haul the minerals from the valley to the main rail line in Silver Plume. |
| Abandoned in 1927 it was renovated in 1984, thanks to local philanthropists, and is now a popular attraction as it winds its way around the mountains and over the 95 foot high Devil's Gate Bridge. | ![]() |
