Edinburgh Castle, as seen from my hotel room. |
It was about 11 AM by the time I left Cupar and began my journey to Edinburgh. The drive was relatively short, less than two hours, but in Edinburgh, as in most major cities, the best thing you can do is find a way not to need your car. |
| By the time got settled in, it was the better part of 2 PM, so I got a late start seeing the city. I had read a few guide books and had planned to get my exercise by walking The Royal Mile, a collection of governmental, historical, religious, and commercial sites in the heart of downtown Edinburgh. I started at the top of the hill, figuring to walk to the bottom, stopping as the mood suited, and walking back up, finding dinner somewhere along the way. One stop (not my first) was St. Giles Cathedral, site of many royal and religious events since medieval times. | ![]() |

European churches are often open to the public for sightseeing, as was St. Giles. The organ was being played - I don't know what was more impressive: the sight of the organ or the sound. The stained glass windows and building architecture are true works of art. | ![]() |
