July, 2001

One of the things I was really looking forward to was driving the back roads of the English and Scottish countryside.    Yet. some of my early travels would find me on the motorways, such as a portion of M6 shown here.  I thought once I exited I would be on a quaint little road, but that was still a ways away.
However, I did find a nice two lane road, shown at the right, that took me into Windemere.  While walking in Windemere, I had a conversation with one of the locals outside a bed and breakfast.  He was telling me all about this beautiful English garden, comprised of wild flowers, that looked as though they were put together by a landscape architect.  He also shared with me an alternate way to get to my next destination, Hadrian's Wall, taking some back roads which is just what I wanted to do.
So, I was off in my hired car - a Peugeot 306LX, which suited my needs quite well.  I stole time for this photo on a country road.

One of the delightful parts of this trip was that no matter where I went, there were beautiful sites: town or country.  Here, you can see how the road narrows with my Peugeot taking nearly the entire lane of this narrow road and a bit later, navigating through the walled portion of the same road got to be exciting when passing oncoming cars.  Later on, in Scotland, some roads were so narrow that when you encountered another car, one or the other had to back up to a driveway or field entrance, to allow the other car to pass.  Quaint!
