I left Atlanta Friday evening, July 6, 2001 at 8:30 PM on Delta flight 64 to Manchester, England. With the five hour time change, we arrived at 9:00 AM Saturday morning. I cleared customs with no problems and picked up my rental car. I was so looking forward to touring the English and Scottish countryside with quaint farms and villages. |
| I was as prepared as I could be to deal with the road system - driving on the left side of the road, shifting with my left hand, and ready to deal with the roundabouts. I had driven on the motorways before and I knew I would be driving on the M6 motorway north of Manchester, while still looking forward to driving the rural roads. While driving up M6, signs urged drivers to take a break rather than drive while tired. After a long flight, that applied to me, so I stopped at the next rest area. To my horror, I was greeted by a sign for Burger King and Kentucky Fried Chicken. I flew 5,000 miles in search of royalty and high tea - I got Colonel Sanders and a whopper! | ![]() |
Not to panic - the best was yet to come.
