Oxford University

July, 2002

Hertford College - founded as Hart hall about 1282  Talk about tradition. Hertford is one of several colleges comprising Oxford University. Others include Balliol College, Trinity College, and Exeter College. There is an incredible sense of place at Oxford. Below left, the circular building is Sheldonian Theater, the University's ceremonial hall designed in 1663 by Sir Christopher Wren when he was the resident Professor of Astronomy. On the darker side, in the middle of Broad Street, Bishops Ridley and Cranmer were burnt at the stake in 1555 and 1556 for rejecting the doctrine of the Catholic Church.

Broad Street, Oxford. Dating from the 13th century.
To the right, Catte street is home to additional university buildings. There is limited automobile access. Streets are barricaded and open to pedestrians. Only special permit holders and delivery vehicles are permitted on the streets. A walkers paradise.
