St. Andrews

July, 2001

Upon arriving, St. Andrews was still bustling – near 9 PM on Sunday evening – and parking was at a premium in this ancient city.
I retraced my route back about 5 miles and got a B&B room at the Guard House Bridge Hotel.  It was clean but spartan, but I simply needed a place to sleep for one night -  and I would be up and out by 6 AM, so I paid up £20 ($30 US) for the night.
In case you didn’t know, St. Andrews is considered the home of golf, with the Old Course being the oldest golf course in the world.  There are currently 6 courses in the complex but the original, and the one where the (British) Open is played is the “Old Course.”  The photo below, taken from the Old Course, shows the town of St. Andrews.  The University of St. Andrews is located on the extreme left side of this photograph.
This view will be familiar to many golfers and golf fans.  It is taken from the 18th tee on the Old Course, looking toward the clubhouse located on the left side of the photo.  The famous Swilcan Bridge appears in the right foreground, with perhaps the most recent memory being of Arnold Palmer making his final appearance at the British Open in 2000, waving an appreciative goodbye to the golfing fans.
