Welcome! It has been an interesting time these past summers - I've had some unique travel opportunities that that can only be described as fantasy travel. Last year, 2001, among other travels, I had the opportunity to visit England and Scotland and again this summer, 2002, I again had a similar opportunity. |
I covered quite a few miles, to say the least. My general route can be seen on the map to the left. As in 2001, I landed in central England at Manchester. Among my goals was to play golf at some of the courses which host The Open Championship (The British Open). Therefore, my first journey was just a short ride from Manchester to Royal Lytham - St. Anne's and also to Royal Birkdale, located just south of St. Anne's. After two rounds of "fantasy golf" - one at each course, I was off to London to pick up my son, Jim, who would be joining me for a few days. Along the way, I saw a road sign for Oxford - I had to stop, and spent a few enjoyable hours in this wonderful English town. On to pick up Jim at Gatwick airport, just south of London. We parked the car and took the train into London for a day of sightseeing. Late that afternoon, we got a head start on our next journey and drove to Cambridge where we stayed overnight. The next day, we went to the small town of Shipdham, England, which was the home base of the 68th squadron of the 8th US Air Force in World War II. More on that later. Next, we traveled north toward Scotland,
staying overnight in the north of England at Carlisle. The
next morning, we completed our drive into Scotland, visiting my
father's - Jim's grandfather's ancestral village, Lochwinnoch,
Scotland. Unfortunately, Jim had to get back to the states,
so I dropped him off in Edinburgh and he took a train to his return
flight. Next, I drove north to Carnoustie for another round of golf. Later that day, I stopped by Cupar, Fife, Scotland to visit with John and Mary Millar with whom I stayed in 2001 - a delightful visit - again, more on that later. I spent the night and the next day in Edinburgh and then made one last pilgrimage to Lochwinnoch - playing the local golf course and staying one more night in that special place, before returning back to Manchester for my flight home. So, please join me on my virtual tour of England and Scotland, 2002. |
