Scotland
Edinburgh Castle

July 12, 2001

It was to be my final day in Scotland.  Tomorrow, I would be returning to the USA.  But for today, I would be touring Edinburgh Castle, the icon of Scottish identity.
Situated on Castle Rock, atop an ancient volcano, Edinburgh Castle affords a commanding view of the surrounding area.  For nearly 1,000 years the castle, which is more like a small city than a single building, has played a central role in the formation and governance of Scotland.
The castle offers a high ground view of Edinburgh, including Princes Park.
The guards are largely ceremonial, but assignment to the castle is an honor for the individual and unit.
