Elk of the
Madison River
Elk at Madison River Leaving Old Faithful and Yellowstone, we drove north to Madison, and then to the west entrance of Yellowstone, following the Madison River.  Following the old rule of "if there are a bunch of cars something is going on," we stopped at an overlook near the park entrance.  
Here was a bull elk protecting his harem.  It was mating season and he seemed particularly interested in one cow who didn't seem to share the same interest.  Each time he would approach her, she would run.

She finally disappeared into the herd.  Interestingly, as the bull would meander through the herd approaching each cow, they would get up and move to another position, away from the male.
