| Mormon
Tabernacle | ![]() | The most famous and popular site in Salt Lake City is the Mormon Temple. It consumes an entire city block and inside the walls are an elaborate series of gardens. |
![]() | Easily identifiable at night, the Mormon Temple also serves as the focal point of direction in Salt Lake. All main streets are numbered and designated relative to their position from the Temple. For example, 4th Street South is the fourth main street south of the Temple. |
The
Temple is huge - it is nearly impossible to get the entire structure into the
camera lens. Surprisingly, the grounds were still open well after dark although
there was much less activity. By that time, most of the young missionaries
who serve for two years, were walking back to their apartments. Seen from
a park across the street, one can appreciate the grandeur of this structure which
was completed in the 1890s after approximately forty years of effort. While
the grounds, displays, and secondary buildings are open to the public - including
guided tours - the main Temple is closed to all except members of the Mormon Church
- The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. | ![]() |
