Utah welcome sign - heading west from Wyoming Well, we missed the sign at the Salt Lake City Airport so "Welcome to Utah" will have to do.  Actually, this picture was taken about 150 miles northeast of Salt Lake City and really shows the wide open spaces of the western United States.  More on that later.
For now, it's back to Salt Lake City which sits on the floor of a high desert valley, 4,400 feet above sea level, surrounded by the peaks of the Wasatch and Oquirrh Mountains.  Viewed from a mountain to the north of downtown, the Wasatch Mountains are seen on the left with the state capitol in the center.

The spire of the Mormon Tabernacle can be seen at the extreme right, just in front of the office building with the shiny top.  From the same point (north of downtown) looking toward the southeast, the peaks of the Wasatch may be seen along with the University of Utah on the right side of the picture, about half way up.
