Freeport

to Acadia

June 8, 2002

If I were to quickly show this sign to any of the folks here in Jacksonville, Florida, their first reaction would be that it was taken locally - somewhere near Brunswick, Georgia, where US 1 and Interstate 95 parallel each other, running north up the east coast.  But a closer look at the I/95 sign shows that this photo was taken instead near Brunswick, Maine.  It was just north of Freeport as we began our scenic drive up US 1 towards Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park.
The drive to Bar Harbor was only a little over three hours long.  One of the first towns we ran into was Camden, Maine.
Like Freeport, Camden was a visual delight.  There was a fair amount of Saturday morning traffic in this small town, and as I sat waiting for a stop light, I captured the "Welcome to Camden" photo - just so I could place the next photo or two.  As we proceeded through town, I asked Elaine to take a picture or two.  Unfortunately, one vehicle got in the way a bit, but looking behind this SUV, is a gorgeous white New England church.
Continuing up the coast, the weather got cooler and we were treated to scenes of farmland and seashore.
In the photo to the right, I'm not standing at the ocean shore, but rather overlooking the Penobscot River.  During our travels, the landscape reminded us of central Ontario, Canada, with small lakes dotting the landscape amid the rolling hills, pines, and birch trees.  It was a great and scenic drive.  There were hundreds of cottage industries scattered along the highway but fortunately, we didn't stop.  We returned south down Interstate 95, but by the time we drove the additional distance over to Bangor, it only took us 10 minutes longer to enjoy the scenic drive up US 1.
