These were the sites we came to see - the rocky coast of Maine, similar to what we had seen previously at Kennebunkport. These photos were taken from the Loop Road in Acadia National Park. |

There are several scenic turnouts
along the Loop Road, that can be used to take casual pictures such as
these. In addition, many also serve as the trail head for the many
hiking trails throughout the park. For the most part, I was content
to walk far enough to get the photos I wanted, but didn't do any serious
hiking. I'm saving that for our trip to Glacier National Park in
July, with a side trip to Mount Allan (no kidding) in Kananaskis, Alberta,
Canada (they have great national parks too).

| One of the more interesting sights along the coastline is Thunder Hole, pictured left. While the granite shore is resistant to the pounding waves, from time to time, large chunks of granite break away and leave large rectangular chasms. As the waves continue to pound into the opening, if there is an overhang, the air will get compressed by the incoming wave, and when the wave recedes and the air escapes, now under pressure, there is an onomatopoeic boom. Quite a sight - and sound! |
