Freeport, Maine  We returned to the same hotel in Freeport where we stayed our first night of the trip.  The hotel was about 20 minutes from the Portland airport and we had an early flight the next day.  After another delightful seafood dinner, we hit the shops of Freeport.
It was early evening, and most of the crowds were gone.  Freeport is like a factory outlet mall, but instead of cookie cutter architecture, the town has the traditional character of a small New England town.  All the names routinely found in a factory outlet, are in Freeport, but each in their own buildings.  I liked the LL Bean store - open 24 hours, 365 days a year.  The store was huge, and it was a guy store.
Pictured to the right, is the shoe department.  Rather than trying out climbing or other outdoor shoes on a carpet, they have an artificial rock station so you can get a better feel for the shoes.  A really unique store.
And now, before closing, it's time to come clean.  Yes, this is the bear that appeared on the previous page - one of the many stuffed animals in the LL Bean store.  Digital photography is fun.

The next morning, we were on our way back to Jacksonville.  This was our first trip to Maine and we hope to come back during the summer of 2002, traveling up the coast- but wait - we did... Yes, there are some additions to our October 2001 trip, including some further views of Freeport, a scenic ride up highway US1, and a view of Acadia National Park. So, let's keep going.
