Bear - Flathead Lake

July 2002

Elaine spotted this bear crossing a gravel road.

We wanted to spend one day sightseeing outside the national park. We stayed overnight in Whitefish, Montana, and the next day planned to make the circular trip around Flathead Lake - a distance of about 150 miles.

We were riding through one of the state park on the east side of Flathead Lake when Elaine spotted a bear crossing a gravel road.

Bear in the woods

He was moving parallel to the road we were on. From the safety of the car, we were taking as many photos as we could.

Looking right at us
Digital cameras and 35mm cameras are great, but they sometimes take too long to turn on or set up. When we travel, we buy a disposable camera, have the film pre-advanced, and leave it in a cup holder, immediately available. That way, if we see some wildlife, it is grab, point, shoot. In this case, Elaine was shooting with the disposable, I was shooting with the digital camera and 35mm camera with a 300mm zoom lens. I'm not sure which photos are from which camera - we were following this guy for about 5 minutes, but it was fun to see him and photograph him in his natural habitat.
