New
Mexico
May 2001
Whoa!  Talk about a change in scenery.  It is only about 110 miles distance (east) from the previous page to here, but it is a world of difference in terms of geography and climate.  This is north central New Mexico, and geographically, is located in the San Juan Mountain range of the Rocky Mountains.
My own theory is that as adults, we prefer the surroundings we grew up with as kids.  I find the desert unique, but it's too brown and arid.  Some of my Florida friends love the inter-coastal marshes.  The rolling hills of Western New York, where I grew up, don't begin to compare to the Rocky Mountains, but I think the scenery in the Rockies is among the most beautiful in the world.
These photos are on highway US 84, heading south from Durango, Colorado towards Taos, New Mexico.
