Oregon
Coast

June 2007

As we drove down the coast, we were pleased to see as many roadside stops and ease of access to the ocean, along the way. Before leaving on this trip, I encountered some information that indicated that there is no private ownership of oceanfront property in Oregon - the entire coast is owned by the state - what a great idea!
This became more apparent at our next hotel stop where it was evident that beachfront sidewalks traversed both private homes and our hotel property.

Proceeding south, we came upon the historic Yaquina Bay Lighthouse, that actively served ships at sea between 1871 and 1874, and was relit in 1996. I would assume the relighting was for tourist / commercial purposes as GPS has largely eliminated the need for coastal lighthouses.
One of the informational signs indicated that this area was originally named Cape Foulweather by Captain James Cook on March 7, 1778, with a follow-up note indicating that winds of 100 mph are not unusual.
