Mission

Espada

Mission Espada, San Antonio, Texas

The last of the San Antonio missions we visited, and the most southerly, was Mission Espada. This particular mission was not as grand and time had not been as kind to it as to some of the other missions, with some of the walls deteriorated to half their original height, but it did offer another opportunity to observe the mission lifestyle.

Just prior to arriving at Mission Espada, we encountered a working aqueduct, originally built to serve the mission. Although we didn't see it, there was also a dam built on the San Antonio river to aid in irrigation for the missions. I think this is rather remarkable - the huge amount of effort to construct both the missions, dam, and aqueduct, using the technology of the eighteenth century. All in all, a remarkable accomplishment - and we can still look back and enjoy it today.

Well, it seems that my web sites never exactly follow the real sequence of our trips. We arrived on Saturday and in the afternoon, we took a walking and boat tour of the Riverwalk, and Saturday evening, we had a delightful dinner on the Riverwalk. That's where I'll take you next.
