The Riverwalk Paseo Del Rio |

The Alamo may be the most famous piece of real estate in San Antonio, but for me, the jewel is the Riverwalk - the Paseo Del Rio. I first became familiar with the Riverwalk in 1967 while stationed in San Antonio and it has only improved over the years. Situated below street level, the Riverwalk winds through downtown San Antonio - with the sidewalks on both sides, lined with flowers, waterfalls, sidewalk cafes, and restaurants.

You can walk along the Riverwalk for free - there are several cross over bridges along the route, or for a nominal fee of about $5, you can hitch a ride on one of the flat bottom boats, available at multiple locations - and all take the same route. I got lucky - when we got on, I got the front seat - great for taking pictures. The photo below right is the relatively new Riverplace Mall. We didn't go inside but you can use your imagination. Note the diners on the sidewalk cafe in the lower left of that picture. |
