Beacon Rock
Ascent

June 2007

Beacon Rock was only about a ten minute drive from our hotel so I arrived just about 6:00 AM. As for a degree of difficulty, I would definitely call this a hike, not a climb. The trail to the summit was built by Henry Biddle and Charles Johnson between 1915 and 1918. The lower portion, which is relatively short, is a pleasant walk through the woods.

The majority of the trail is carved into the volcanic rock and is about three or four feet wide. The trail is narrow, the drop off is severe, but there are safety railings - although I will admit to having second thoughts at some of the higher elevations. Looking at the face of Beacon Rock, I had even greater admiration for the courage of Lewis and Clark.
