Leavenworth June 2007 |

As we continued our journey on the lower Cascade Loop, it was approaching lunchtime when we came upon the town of Leavenworth, Washington which has transformed itself into a Bavarian Village.
|
As you drive into town (from the west) the commercial district of the town splits off to the right while the main highway continues straight - we took the curve to the right. Like the town of Helen, Georgia, the architecture of all the buildings is in a German / Bavarian style and since our visit happened to be on a Sunday afternoon, there was a small band playing German folk music in the park which is located in the middle of the shopping district - actually just to the left of the tree in the lower right photo. There are all sorts of artists displaying their work such as shown in the photo to the lower left. Not unexpectedly, there are any number of restaurants featuring traditional German dishes but if you're not that adventurous, most restaurants will also offer a choice of traditional American food. I went for the Bratwurst at Gustav's, located at the west end of town. As we were leaving Leavenworth, driving out the east end of town - just to remind us where we were, there were the Golden Arches of the local McDonald's. |
