Ponte Du Hoc
A few miles east of Utah Beach is Pointe Du Hoc. On D-Day, American Rangers scaled the cliffs to secure Pointe Du Hoc, which has a commanding view of the D-Day beaches. Of the 225 that arrived on the beach, only 90 survived.

the photo below. An equally commanding view exists looking east.
If for nothing but the ability to observe the action, this was an important
military objective.
