Jim in a D-Day Crater - Pointe Du Hoc, Normandy, FrancePointe Du Hoc
The landscape is today, as it was on June 6, 1944, cratered from artillery shells and bombs.  Jim is pictured above standing in one of the craters while the landscape is surreal beyond description.

We had two interesting encounters at Pointe Du Hoc.  The first was a group of three American coeds.  They were taking each other's pictures, so I offered to take all three of them together.  Great - one gave me her camera and they posed together, but quickly the other two asked that we take a picture with each of their cameras so they would each have a photo.  So, Jim and I had our own camera, three of their cameras, and we just shot away.  We chatted - they were exchange students from Swathmore College studying abroad for one semester in Grenoble, France.  They were taking in as many interesting places as they could and most interesting, they actually understood and appreciated the unique opportunity they had to see and experience a completely different part of the world.

I also took a picture of another couple.  At first, we thought they were American - from their conversation, but it turned out that the guy was from Chicago and his girlfriend was French.  They met while she was an exchange student in Chicago.  He helped her get acclimated to the United States and now, he was visiting her in France, glad to have a personal French tour guide and translator.  A very nice couple - I was to meet them later.

Cratered landscape, Pointe Du Hoc, Normandy, France.
The surreal landscape of Pointe Du Hoc.  Remnants of a gun emplacement can be seen on the left while the flat concrete of an underground bunker can be seen near the bottom right of the lower photo.  The cliffs of this part of the Normandy coast can be seen in the top of the photo.
