Utah Beach, Normandy, France

We left St. Mère Église and continued our D-Day Beach tour, heading east along the Normandy Coast.  There were five beaches on D-Day.  The American beaches were Utah and Omaha on the western flank.  The Canadians had Juno and were flanked on both sides by the British at Gold and Sword.  Our next stop was actually the western most beach, Utah, about 8 miles from St. Mère Église.
View from a German defensive position - Utah Beach

The beaches are very wide, perhaps one hundred yards.  There is a small knoll that runs the length of the beach.  Above right, the photo shows the remains of a German defensive position, and some of the same barbed wire can be seen in the photo below.  American forces pinned on the beach,  huddled at the base of the knoll until finally going over the top.
