This was the first of a kind trip - my son, Jim, and I were planning a trip to Europe. It would, by necessity, be short, but we planned to squeeze in as much as we could in the time we had. We departed Atlanta late on the afternoon of Tuesday, October 17, 2000 on a flight to Brussels, Belgium. Following advice of friends, I tried to catch some sleep on the plane - but had limited success - catching only about 2 of the 4 hours I had planned.
With the six hour time change, we arrived in Brussels at 8:00 AM on Wednesday, October 18. We picked up our rental car, A Ford Mondeo - similar to an Escort - with a diesel engine and manual 5 speed transmission - which is the norm for rental cars in Europe.
